Leetta Douglas
A seasoned artist and architectural designer, she defies
convention by using sponges instead of brushes to create her unique
pieces. Her early artistic journey, characterized by a scholarship to
the Minneapolis College of Art and Design/Minneapolis Institute of Art
at age 18, laid the foundation for a rich educational experience,
culminating in a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Environmental Design
from the University of Houston and a Master of Education from the
University of St. Thomas.
In the 1980s, Leetta left her mark on the vibrant Houston art scene with
her abstract watercolors, dyes, and ink, her captivating pieces adorning
law offices and hospitals alike. As her career progressed into the 90s,
she adeptly shifted her focus to commercial design and architectural
renderings, displaying her remarkable versatility as an artist.
Today, Leetta finds joy in the expansive canvas of her acrylic and
marker art and in fine, textured papers where she exercises her love for
control with colored pencils. These intricate pieces underscore her
ability to produce detailed drawings that gracefully straddle
meticulousness and freedom. Leetta Douglas invites viewers to experience
the world as she sees it - bold, free, and utterly captivating.
Our Souls Shine Bright” is a curatorial project featuring work from members of the ROHO Collective. The exhibition seeks to give a united voice through art that shines a light on the cultural experiences of artists of color. Works will speak to the endurance and emotion of existence post-pandemic and social uprisings of the past few years. The exhibition will use artistic expression to invite the community to an experience of connection, unity, liberation, and imagination.
